Rifts rise on Mt. Baldy

MT. BALDY VILLAGE - Missy and Ron Ellingson admit their six-cabin Mt. Baldy Lodge is a cash cow when a foot of snow falls.

But the hordes of visitors revolving in and out of the lodge's restaurant on stormy weekends has its down side.

In a town of about 500, the Ellingsons are just one business couple out of a handful of restaurant and motel owners who stay in touch with each other but don't necessarily work side by side to attract tourists.

In fact, there's a subtle tension you wouldn't notice unless you're overly curious.

Whatever their differences, business owners say summertime hikers from all over Southern California are finally becoming more of a mainstay at lodges in the San Antonio Canyon. Summer business is usually sluggish.

Ironically, it's winter's massive snowfalls that bring seasonal difficulties to the Ellingons' doorstep - not the Mt.

Dollar Thrifty slashes pay, benefits

A slow travel market, weakening economy and disappointing fourth quarter are prompting Tulsa-based Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc. to make major salary and benefit cuts, officials say.

In its third retrenchment of the past year, the rental car company is suspending its matching contributions to employees' 401(k) retirement plans. It is also suspending merit pay increases for executives and enacting 21 percent salary cuts for executives at the vice president level and above.

Employees were notified of the cuts during the past week in a memo from President and CEO Gary Paxton.

Dollar Thrifty employs 8,500 people worldwide and 970 in Tulsa.

“As you read daily in the headlines, the U.S. economy is slowing significantly and many economists are now projecting that we are entering a recession," Paxton wrote in the memo.

We are only 2 months since the election and the blame game has started.Already typical of this labour Government. The Libs presided over great jobs growth, great wealth creation measures which the labour has falsly inherited by slick rehtoric at the last election. Now we want that put into action as well as the promised tax cuts and real reform of the tax system or the labour party will once again be shown as poor financial managers.

The venerable history of protectionism

President Bill Clinton fought hard to win approval of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Despite some of his campaign rhetoric, Barack Obama is careful to express qualified support for free trade, even when stumping in the industrial Midwest.

Moreover, many American conservatives have opposed free trade.

Jesse Helms, the most outspoken conservative in the Senate for three decades, was no free trader. Neither was Alexander Hamilton, who could be considered the founder of American conservatism.

For almost 100 years after the Civil War, the Republican Party (led by men like Lincoln and McKinley) was overtly protectionist. Theodore Roosevelt, a hero of John McCain's, wrote that "pernicious indulgence in the doctrine of free trade seems inevitably to produce fatty degeneration of the moral fiber."

The first significant Republican free trader was President Dwight Eisenhower.
