How Obama Can Win

The real demand for "comprehensive reform" came from intellectuals, ethnic interests and political strategists who saw a transformative potential in winning the Latino vote. Like Iraq, it was a war of choice. In the event, it turned out businesses didn't care nearly as much about it as Karl Rove, John McCain and Tamar Jacoby. Bush was reduced to urging businessmen to lobby for his plan.]

The upshot is that the current lack of a "Reagan" candidate is a historical accident (unless you also want to blame Bush for failing to put in place an adequate successor). Mitt Romney didn't have to be a Mormon. Fred Thompson--or someone like him--could have put the Coalition back together. Bush's damage turned out not to be irreperable: The war in Iraq is fading. Immigrant semi-amnesty can (and probably will) be postponed.

Dallas area new-vehicle sales rise 4.5% in 2007

Contrary to national trends, new car and truck sales in the Dallas-Fort Worth area rose 4.5 percent last year.

The data from the Freeman Metroplex Recap includes retail sales as well as sales to car rental agencies and fleets. And the increase "portends well for business this year," said Drew Campbell, president of the New Car Dealers Association of Metropolitan Dallas.

"I think it's very exciting," he said Wednesday. "We are in the center of the United States. Because of that, we're not having the ups and downs of the West Coast and East Coast."

If new vehicle sales here continue to grow, they'll be bucking some considerable economic headwinds. New car and truck sales in the U.S. dropped 2.5 percent last year and are expected to fall by at least that much this year.

Dealers in the four-county Dallas-Fort Worth area sold 383,939 new vehicles last year, compared with 367,381 in 2006, according to the Metroplex Recap.

Planners hear more ideas on recreation needs

The most popular idea at the latest meeting was to develop river access areas in Emlenton for bird watching.

With the public meetings complete, those working on Venango County's comprehensive recreation plan have some early indications of the interests of county residents.

The last of three meetings to gather public input for the plan was held Tuesday in Emlenton. It drew 12 people who generated 27 suggestions for improving recreational opportunities in the county.

The meeting was conducted by Tom Morus of Pashek Associates, a Pittsburgh area planning firm hired by the county to develop a comprehensive plan addressing recreation, parks, trails and open spaces.

The most popular idea at the meeting was to develop access areas along the Allegheny River in Emlenton for bird watching.

Forget Latte Factor, Learn How to Save Money in a Digital World

So you want to save a few hundred dollars but don't want to give up your morning latte? While it is easy to preach how to cut your daily habits to save a buck, it is difficult to practice the same for most folks. However, there are other ways to cut your expenses without sacrificing your daily habits.

In today's technology driven society, we spend a lot of money buying electronics gadgets and accompanying services to make our life easy. Sellers know that we have disposable incomes and they push many services that we absolutely don't need.

When you sign up for a cell phone service, they will try to push the loss-damage warranty for $5 a month. When did you last use that warranty to claim a new phone? In most cases you don't need the service. In the worst case, if you loose or damage the phone, buy a cheap phone from eBay to carry you over till your contract expires.

Delta canal alive again?

This executive order is a presumption of a direction without any determination that it is the right direction to go.

"It could be a disaster for San Joaquin County."

No argument from Dante Nomellini, a Stockton attorney who represents central Delta farmers.

Nomellini said Monday he's heard whisperings about an impending executive order.

"We'll have to see what it says," he said.

He calls the governor's entire Delta Vision process a "sham," saying that state officials have long known they wanted to build a canal.

South Delta farmer and engineer Alex Hildebrand also is closely following developments.

"They seem to want to get the thing financed and committed before analyzing the consequences," Hildebrand said. "If they're bull-headedly going to go ahead with the plan to build the canal, then we've lost."

Schwarzenegger's proposed state budget includes $1.4 million to begin the environmental analysis needed to determine whether to build a peripheral canal.
