| Helios: ‘Resign’ call to Minister
CALLS for Communications Minister Haris Thrassous resignation grew louder yesterday after the Helios crash enquiry heard damning evidence about the chaotic state of air safety on the island. Evidence before the committee suggests the Civil Aviation Department is a shambles, making the possibility of another air disaster more likely. Moreover, it was claimed the Helios Airways crash Boeing was permitted to fly before it had rectified eight pending safety issues. These revelations, among others, have upset and angered the Helios relatives, who are demanding that Thrassou do the honourable thing and resign. The minister says he should be judged on all the evidence and not snippets of testimony that can be refuted by others. Rallied The government has rallied round the besieged minister but the opposition says his position is shaky at best, while the Greens are urging him to go now.
Nearby businesses wondered about 'spa' clients
Business owners near a north Chandler spa police say was a front for prostitution had no solid evidence but a few clues something unusual may have been going on inside. "I suspected something might be going on," said Kurt Carmichael, owner of rental business Karaoke Sing-A-Long, next door to Blue Sky Spa. Both operate in a strip mall on the northwest corner of Dobson and Elliot roads. "The thing I noticed is that a lot of guys would go in and out of there," Carmichael said. "I never saw a woman." .
Special Rielle-Time Coverage!
Barack Obama has often said he'd consider putting Repbulicans in his cabinet and even bandied about names like Sens. Dick Lugar and Chuck Hagel. Forget that this is a cliche appeal to hack Washington bipartisanism, that Sen. Hagel's reputation seems to have been built on the substitution of good looks and agonizing passion for coherent, articulated thought, that the press mainly loves him because he's always ready to go on television and stab his party in the back. Why would you promote Hagel at the very moment when his prediction that the Surge was "the most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country since Vietnam" appears to have been humiliatingly wrong? Disastrously wrong, potentially, if it had been heeded. Disqualifyingly wrong, you'd think. Obama is saying, in effect, that his need for respectable approval trumps reality.
Home-rental evictions up
Maricopa County constables are evicting more renters of single-family homes as they struggle to pay rent in the faltering economy or as foreclosures strike their landlords. The tenants cut across all demographics and properties, from luxury homes in north Scottsdale to affordable homes in the suburbs. Some tenants are blindsided by the evictions, unaware the home fell into foreclosure even as they have continued to pay rent to homeowners. Other tenants have failed to pay rent and have already boxed their belongings, waiting for a constable to bang on the front door. .
U.S. Telecom Growth Slower Than Global Industry
European growth will be just ahead of the United States at 7.5 percent annually, while Canada is expected to be the slowest region with 5.4 percent annually. According to the study, about 35 percent of U.S. wireless service revenue will come from data services such as mobile Web surfing in 2011, up from 16 percent in 2007. With Web traffic for services such as Internet video soaring, the study found that in wired networks "current capacity will soon be unable to support bandwidth demand." This is in contrast with the commonly held view in 2003 that "there would be excess network capacity for the foreseeable future." Copyright Reuters 2007. All rights reserved.
