Man dies after shopping centre fall

No matter what you think, you do stay and look, you question why he did what he did and would desperately like to help. Believe me, as a parent, many thoughts go through your head, it is not the ghoulish aspect that holds you as many of you are suggesting. Despite comments to the contrary I thought the one man and one woman that obviously knew what they were doing were excellent, keeping him alive, talking to him; as I'm sure they were trained to do. Don't knock the Glades staff. .

Text of Ficano's State of the County address

Our Department of Homeland Security has set up a countywide alert program to notify the public of emergencies and important public safety issues. Last year, we used Countywide Alert for the opening of the Grosse Ile Bridge and snow emergencies in Dearborn and Trenton. We continue to sign up people for this free service at Wayne.getalerts.org.

Our nationally recognized Nuisance Abatement Program took legal action to improve more than 800 vacant or blighted properties last year. We're helping rebuild communities, one neighborhood at a time.

The health of our communities is critical to our quality of life. Our Department of Public Health last year launched Operation Safe Sleep to save babies from tragic, premature death due to unsafe sleeping conditions. More than 1,600 calls for assistance were answered.

Ad aims to revive bill on smoking ban

Write or call the business to let them know your dissatisfaction. When they get enough complaints and they see an effect on their business, then you will have triumphed and will feel far better about yourself than if the government did it for you. Smoking restaurants will one day be a thing of the past, but it needs to be because the free market drove it, not the government. Keith provided a great list of smoke-free establishments as well as the web site that lists them. What a great resource. Thank you Keith. I don't smoke and I agree that it is a vile habit. But I, above all else, do not want the government to infringe on our civil liberties whether in business or in private. There are a myriad of issues that effect us health-wise whether directly or in-directly. Cell phone use while drive is one of those.

Shootout report cites confusion

U.S. marshals had two strategies for capturing Jason Karlo Anderson, a violent drug dealer from their top-15 wanted list who was hiding out in Alaska. One involved his girlfriend, who had fled after he shoved his .45-caliber pistol in her mouth. The other involved surrounding the cabin complex in Homer where he was thought to be staying.

Both scenarios could easily turn into hostage situations, the troopers worried, because Anderson kept his two small children close by at all times. He had already threatened to kill them -- and as many cops as possible -- if an arrest was attempted.

"If they wanted our assistance," said Capt. Tom Bowman, head of the Kenai Peninsula troopers detachment, "it would be only when we could guarantee he was separated from the kids, his pit bull, which he always had with him, and his gun."

Bowman's words of caution emerged from the troopers investigation into the shootout at the Homer Airport, which was finally released last week, two years after the incident that left Anderson dead and his 2-year-old son permanently brain-damaged.
