| Dollar Thrifty purchases Wichita Mid-Continent Airport franchises
Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc. has acquired the Thrifty Car Rental and Dollar Rent A Car in-terminal franchises at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport. The Thrifty Car Rental location was acquired from Flacks Enterprises LLC, based in Kansas City, Mo. The Dollar Rent A Car operation was acquired from E & J Rental & Leasing Inc., owned by Wichitan Dave Johnson. Since 1995, the Dollar location has been the only locally-owned rental car company at the Mid-Continent Airport. The acquisitions were part of a move to bring franchises under corporate ownership at several major Midwestern airports. .

South African blacks say video painful
The campus was quiet Thursday a day after police used a stun grenade to disperse stone-throwing students protesting the video. White and black students walked to and from classes — but seldom together. A few police patrolled the campus. In the video, which was made last year but surfaced this week, the Afrikaans-speaking students refer sarcastically to the university's policy of integrating the campus dorms. University rector Frederick Fourie said he was reduced to tears by the student's duplicity. "Their actions were despicable," he said. Fourie acknowledged integration at the school was "not perfect." .
County, city discuss limits on development
Mount Airy and Surry County officials have differing opinions on how much control should be placed on growth between the city and Interstate 77.A discussion on that issue surfaced Thursday during a joint meeting of city and county officials at the Mount Airy Municipal Building, as the group outlined utility expansions to areas outside the city limits. .
Fla. Tourism Hit By National Economic Skid
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida's economy, already staggered by a stagnant real estate market and tight credit conditions, suffered another blow Friday when officials said tourism fell by 1.5 million visitors in 2007. Preliminary estimates showed 82.4 million people visited Florida in 2007, compared to 83.9 who came in 2006. It was the first drop-off in visitors to Florida since shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the northeast. "Trends suggest that some vacationers traveling by auto may be staying closer to home," said Bud Nocera, president and CEO of Visit Florida, the state's private-public tourism agency. Folks in other states apparently were staying closer to home too. Tourism was flat a year ago as well, increasing by 1 percent, and Visit Florida has renewed its call on the Legislature for money to help lure more visitors with advertising blitzes.
Sympathy wanes for German rail strikers
Public sympathy for the union behind Germany's biggest rail strike seemed to be waning on Friday when millions of commuters struggled to get to work in freezing weather. The 62-hour walk-out by the GDL train drivers' union over pay has crippled goods transport and hit the steel and retail sectors, raising fears the strike could have a lasting impact on the economy if a solution is not found soon. More strikes are possible from Tuesday, the GDL said. Shipping containers piled up in Germany's largest port in Hamburg, authorities said. Only half the usual freight traffic was running in the northern city on the strike's third day. .
