Philly CarShare becomes well-traveled

You've seen them everywhere. In prime parking territory on Center City streets, in Ikea parking lots, at the Wegman's in Cherry Hill. Hybrids, Mini Coopers, trucks emblazoned Philly CarShare. "Our wheels. Your freedom."

Where do they come from?

Go back to March 2002. Five people meet in the lobby of the Doubletree Hotel in Philadelphia.

Tanya Seaman, 35 and Clayton Lane, 26, both city planners; Larry Shaeffer, a community activist; Eli Massar, who works for the Mural Arts Project; and Nate Robinson, an investment banker.

They are planning a kind of communal rental system for Philadelphia that will allow a single car to be used by multiple drivers every day. People who need the keys for just a couple of hours to get to a child's baseball game or meet a client for lunch or haul home a new microwave.

Dollar Thrifty shares plummet

Shares of Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc. plunged 37 percent Monday following news late Friday that the company expects its 2007 profit to be lower than forecast.

The Tulsa-based rental car company saw its share price drop $9.62 to close at $16.40 on the New York Stock Exchange. More than 3.4 million shares were traded.

It was the biggest drop since Dollar Thrifty's initial public stock offering in December 1997, according to Bloomberg data.

The stock price also reached a new 52-week intraday trading low of $16.27, in contrast with a 52-week high of $55.30 last Feb. 14.

The 52-week high coincided with rumors that Dollar Thrifty and Tulsa-based Vanguard Car Rental USA Inc. were in merger talks. Such a deal never materialized.

L.A.'s upscale downtown delayed

The downtown Los Angeles skyline is still dotted with construction cranes, but not as many as developers once promised.

More than a third of the approximately 110 residential projects proposed for downtown -- including the 50-story Zen tower on 3rd and Hill streets, the Mill Street Lofts in the industrial district, the multitower Metropolis off the 110 Freeway and the conversion of the former Herald Examiner building -- have been delayed or put on hold amid the rocky real estate market.

Canada failing its obligations to children: UNICEF

But it will require people to truly see the problems, not just sit at home railing against a system that has the ability to provide education, training, and more today than ever, employment.

This lady could have been a better person and parent. But the cycle of despair and self-defeat is devastating. She needed to be put on a better path, even if she had to be dragged there.

America`s Ultimatum

Any ways, even without confirming the true I.D of him, the following salvos of words need be shot to correct his latest views as such: 1. Turkey did not join America in Iraq's invasion. As a matter of fact Turkey refused the most convenient invasion route. 2. Turkey will not join any big power to attack Iran. 3. Turkey is not fighting along side any power in Afghanistan. There are couple hundred non combatant Turkish personnel for food and supplies only as Turks and Pathans are not fighting with each other over there. Turkey has non fighting role for food and supplies only at limited scale of couple hundred aid people. PATHANS ARE HALF TURKISH BY BLOOD ACCORDING TO ANTHROPOLOGISTS. AS A MATTER OF FACT ONLY THREE OR FOUR COUNTRIES ARE COMBATANTS IN AFGHANISTAN. ALMOST ALL EUROPE AND COUPLE HUNDRED TURKS IN AFGHAN ARE ONLY RELIEF WORKERS.

CEO Mulally says Ford can weather economic downturn

Ford Motor Co. has sufficient liquidity to weather an economic downturn, even if the economy worsens this year, Chief Executive Alan Mulally said Tuesday.

Mulally said the automaker initially believed it would need $17 billion for restructuring and to cover losses, but was able to raise $23 billion, giving it enough of a cushion.

Mulally said he doesn't know if he has enough time to fix Ford, although he is confident in its restructuring plan that calls for a return to profitability in 2009.

"The plan we put in place is absolutely the right plan," he said during an appearance at the Automotive News World Congress in Detroit. "We're going to create an exciting and viable company."

The CEO's comments came only two days before the company announced the details of another round of buyout and early retirement packages for hourly workers and released its 2007 earnings and projections for the future.

Paper action programme in six months

Dwaf, however, has improved this process and in the Eastern Cape, for instance, the process has been reduced to about nine months from receiving applications to issuing licences.

The targets for employment and growth are expected to be announced at the programme's completion.

CONSULTATION

The DTI, the Department of Agri-culture, the Department of Tourism and Environmental Affairs and Dwaf have been involved in a wide array of con-sultations around other uses of land, and are discussing environmental impacts on forestry.

The NCT Forestry Cooperative, a forestry sector cooperative that represents small and medium-sized players, has also been in discussions with the DTI.

The strategic framework developed for forestry had contributions from the private sector, the Paper Manu-facturers Association of South Africa and Forestry South Africa, as well as other government departments, including KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape provincial governments.
