Dems Should Thank Nader, Not Trash Him

I was part of a group of people in my class at St. Michael's High School in Santa Fe who, when we were assigned to participate in a mock presidential election, decided Bill Clinton and Bob Dole were unacceptable choices and began looking for another option. We discovered Nader.

We decided to try a political experiment: We wouldn't engage in any debate on the issues. We wouldn't even really educate ourselves on what Nader believed. We would simply try to make voting for him cool, and see if we could win the school's mock election that way.

For many of us, it wasn't about the issues. It was about protesting the two-party system that has been dominated by white men and corrupted by money.

A few weeks before the election, a poll of students confirmed what we suspected: Nader was way ahead of Dole and right on the heels of Clinton in our mock election.

Terry Bracks speaks about life after politics

TERRY Bracks has told of her anger at her family being dragged into speculation over the reasons for her husband Steve's decision to resign as Victorian premier.

Speaking for the first time about the events leading up to that day in July, she told how she and Steve sat with their son Nick to tell him it had nothing to do with him.

"I know some people think it was (about Nick), but it wasn't," she said.

It was all about the promise Mr Bracks had made to himself and his family that he would quit when he couldn't give the job his total commitment.

"Eight years was enough," Mrs Bracks said in her first interview since her husband's resignation.

"And now he has become a bit of role model for people to say you can give away power."

Since quitting politics, she said an enormous weight had been lifted from the family.

Rehab program builds S. Fulton woman a house

In the muddy backyard of her new south Fulton home, Peggy Dye is squeezing her emu.

"I call this one Baby, because she just loves to be hugged," says the septuagenarian, wrapping her arms around the feather-boa neck of a 5-foot bird. "Give me a kiss."

Final UL president candidates answers questions

Interviews for UL's next president began Monday and continue today, but the question-and-answer sessions aren't the end-all, be-all in choosing a new president, advised UL System's search consultant.

"The interview is the least valid predictor of performance," said James Fisher, the system's search consultant. "... The way to find a leader is to find a leader and that's only done through referencing."

Californians, Oregonians visit Southern Oregon

Californians and fellow Oregonians are still the most prevalent tourists in seven Southern Oregon counties. Foreign visitors have more than doubled in the past 15 years. And tent camping is on the decline.

Such were the findings of a survey, the most complete profile on local tourism to date, presented to the Southern Oregon Visitors Association on Monday at its 12th annual Marketing Symposium.
