Internet Family Sues MySpace After Teen Commits Suicide
While the Internet has a wealth of good things going for it, there are some bad points as well. Social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook illustrate these points well. Most users of MySpace and Facebook use the sites as they were intended -- a place to meet friends and find like-minded people to chat with and make new friends. However, both Facebook and MySpace have had problems with sexual predators preying on unsuspecting children using the sites. DailyTech reported earlier this month that Megan Meier, a 13-year-old girl, had committed suicide after a cyber-bully tormented her on her MySpace page. In the case of Meier, the local district attorney said charges were unlikely to be filed. The Dallas Morning News reports that another young girl, a 14-year-old identified only as Julie Doe from California killed herself in July of 2006 after being sexually assaulted by a 30-year-old man that she had met on MySpace named Kiley Ryan Bowers.
Guantánamo and back: an interview with Moazzam Begg
Today, Begg is releasing a book, Enemy Combatant: A British Muslim's Journey To Guantánamo And Back, about his experiences. This happens by chance, he says to coincide with the release of Michael Winterbottom's new film, The Road to Guantánamo, about the three other British detainees, the "Tipton Three". The timing seems good: criticism of the Guantánamo detention centre is intensifying within the US, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for it to be closed, and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair called it an "anomaly" that would have to be "dealt with sooner or later", after one of his ministers backed Merkel's call. So, might the detention centre be closed? "I don't think so. Closing it would be a huge embarrassment to the US, after almost five years of telling the whole world that these dangerous people need to be kept there," said Begg, speaking in London last night.
Rain muddies plans for Rays pitchers' work
PERCIVAL IMPRESSES: Closer Troy Percival, pitching what he said was his first spring training game in three years, made quick work of the Phillies in the fourth. The 38-year-old right-hander got his first out on one pitch, a popout to third, then struck out Wes Helms. He retired Coste on a pop to shallow right. Though Percival said that "after 700-plus appearances, I don't get too excited for a spring game," he was pleased with how he felt, physically. Said Percival, "My health is as good as it's been in years." OPPOSITES ATTRACT: When 2B Akinori Iwamura smacked RHP Adam Eaton's second pitch over the fence in leftfield, it set the tone for the Rays attacking the opposite field. 1B Carlos Pena homered to left-center. Even RF Jonny Gomes went the other way with a first-inning double to right-center.
Study: Casino plan overstates jobs
We cannot improve or build a region's economy based on an industry that depends on our citizens losing billions of dollars every year," Bailey said in a prepared statement. Meanwhile, Rep. Daniel Bosley, D-North Adams, sent out a position paper disputing the governor's claim that casinos are "inevitable." In it, Bosley argues that the tribe's plan to build a $1 billion Indian casino in Middleboro faces bureaucratic hurdles. "There are so many hoops that the native tribe would have to jump to get to a point where the governor thinks they would be," he said. Patrick has hired Spectrum Gaming to do an analysis of his plan. That $189,000 study won't be done for another two to three months, perhaps after the issue is decided. "I think a lot of people have their minds made up," Bosley said.
Mailbag: Manchester United: No Reward for Ferguson’s Loyalty and ...
Remember, he put Saha ahead of Ruud in the Carling Cup final a few years back because Louis started every Carling Cup game and deserved his place, knowing that it would open the door for Ruud to leave. He does it when he believes it is good for the team. Like when he let Beckham go...same with Keane, who I'd like to add retired shortly after leaving due to injury. This is a business, you cant afford slip ups, players know the score and should understand they cant be repaid for loyalty if it would have a negative affect on the teams performance. I bet you think that Gary Neville should play in the last few games of the season if he his fit, just because hes our captain and has been through a loteven though it may mess up what we have been working on all season!! I trust Ferguson's judgement, you should too.
Woman found guilty of arson in 2001 University of Washington fire
U.S. attorneys say five people participated in the 2001 arson at the University of Washington's Center for Urban Horticulture: Briana Waters: Oakland, Calif., served as a lookout and helped rent a car for the team that set the fire. She was found guilty Thursday of two counts of arson, but jurors couldn't agree on a verdict for three other counts. She faces at least five years in prison for each arson count. Lacey Phillabaum: Spokane, pleaded guilty to participating in the arson in exchange for assisting in the prosecution of others involved, including Waters. She faces a prison sentence of three to five years. Jennifer Kolar: Seattle, admitted she used a knife to cut glass so others could get into an office at the horticulture center. She also assisted the government's prosecution and faces a sentence of five to seven years in prison.
